God plants a garden, creates man out of the dust of the earth and places Adam in it, so that he might work it. Adam is called to expand the garden outward, extending God's authority by ruling over the other creatures. God gives him a suitable helper in Eve. They are in God's place, thriving under his good authority and communing with God. This is what humanity was made for.
