Things go from bad to worse in Genesis 4. Although Adam and Eve are fruitful and multiply, things aren't how they should be. Sin has affected even the relationship between family members. Cain kills Abel out of envy, because the Lord didn't accept his sacrifice. And so the downward spiral of sin continues. And yet in the midst of all of this, God will remain faithful to his promise by preserving the offspring of Eve through the birth of Seth.
